How to exploit the beauty of CORTEN

The Annunziata Church in Foligno, designed in 1975 by the architect Carlo Murena, was later affected by a strong earthquake and left abandoned for a long time. It has since been the object of a recovery project in order to become a museum of contemporary art (CIAC). The project has been entrusted to T-studio in collaboration with the engineers Traversari and Mezzadri.

The project involves an intervention of parasitic architecture: the church is attached to a volume made of drilled COR-TEN, which continues inside the church as an elevated walkway defining the circulation in the exhibition space, and also provides a structural function. The COR-TEN, a material that comes from the world of industry, converses perfectly in this operation with the existing church, both through colors and formal language. Another contemporary element in the intervention is the new roof of translucent material that allows natural lighting in the main exhibition space.
