City of Culture by David Chipperfield
David Chipperfield’s City of Culture nears completion in Milan with new images showing the interiors and exteriors of the new museum and gallery complex in the former Ansaldo factory in the creative district surrounding Via Tortona in Milan. Due to open early next year, it will create a home for the CASVA (Centre for Advanced Studies of Visual Art), a new Centre of Non-European Cultures, a new Archaeological Museum, and the ‘Colla brothers’ laboratory of traditional puppets’.
The new building is arranged as a series of two, three and four-storey zinc-clad rectangular volumes, that create a network of courtyards and passages designed to help integrate the new structures within the surrounding industrial architecture, while a curving-formed glass ‘lantern’ emerges at the center in contrast to the rest of the industrially-referential facility.
