Art and Gold for the periphery of Milano
We have been waiting so long and finally, a few days after the inauguration of Expo, the great “golden” headquarters of Fondazione Prada has opened up its doors in Milano.
Located in Largo Isarco n°2, on the southern boundary of the city, the project by OMA invites citizens to take advantage of this new cultural center. The architectural project involved the transformation of a former distillery, but we can not speak of real recovery. Rather, it is a project that combines preservation with an intervention of contemporary architecture. So the author, the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas talks about it:
“Fondazione is not a preservation project nor a new architecture. Two conditions that are usually kept separate here confront each others in a state of permanent interaction, offering a collage of fragments that will not congeal into a single image, or allow any part to dominate the others.”
There are ten buildings, of which seven already existing and three of new construction. The highest, is gilded: an invitation to citizens, even the less well-off ones, to enjoy the richness of culture. To Koolhaas, Fondazione Prada is not a project for its own sake: it will be really working when it starts reactivating and regenerating the "death" areas of Milan southern periphery.
The complex is spread over a total of 19,000 square meters, of which 11000 are devoted to exhibition spaces. The cultural offerings also includes a cinema and a library. And a bar.
The “Bar Luce”, the icing on the cake of Fondazione Prada, is an environment inspired to the '50s of Milano and it has been entirely designed by the director Wes Anderson. Anderson, famous for his minutely detailed and colorful cinematographic sets, chose green formica furnishing and vintage objects to recall the atmosphere of the Old Milan.
The new complex in Milan is a very important turning point for Fondazione Prada, which was born in 1993 from an idea of Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli.
The project director of the Foundation, Astrid Welter, describes the work of Fondazione Prada as an act of responsibility towards the Culture, in a moment when public institutions are in crisis.
Fondazione Prada’s inaugural the exhibit "Serial Classic" which will be open until the end of August.
