The AC Milan Stadium: a new pitch for the Portello district
ARUP and AC Milan recently presented their proposal for the re-development of the Portello district in Milan. A new stadium, which will be built on the grounds of the former trade fair, right next to the new headquarters of AC Milan, the so called “Casa Milan”.
The preliminary design originated from a collaboration with the Department of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, and more specifically with the professor Emilio Faroldi and his team. The architect, in an interview, talked about the importance of city requalification and urban sustainability. The stadium is in fact conceived to be part of the urban fabric thanks to its aesthetic closeness to a building rather than a stadium.
The addition of the stadium within the Portello area has been studied in order to avoid an aggressive visual impact: the stadium will reach a maximum height of 30 meters above ground level, using 10 meters of underground excavation. The noise impact will also be mitigated by the most advanced technologies in the field of noise reduction.
The new stadium of AC Milan is conceived to be a true urban center open to the public 24/7, and not only during football matches. The new complex will include a hotel, a sports college, restaurants, a children's playground, green areas and spaces equipped for artists and local citizens.
Public transport will have a key role in reaching the new stadium. Research developed prior to the project focused on the analysis and the study of more than 70 stadiums around the world; the references adopted for this proposal are the Emirates Stadium in London, St. Jakob Park in Basel, San Mamés in Bilbao and the Neuchatel Xamax Stadium.
